Lucille Atwood Lewis

September 22, 1927 — October 27, 2026

Lucille Atwood Lewis, age 99 of Alexandria, Tennessee was called home to her Lord and Savior on October 27, 2026. A woman of remarkable grace, wisdom and quiet determination, Lucille leaves behind a legacy of nearly a century defined by faith and family. Throughout her life she blessed many with her loving and kind spirit.

Born on September 22, 1927 in Brush Creek, TN to the late Lon and Alma Smith Atwood, she was the fourth of seven children. At the age of 16, she married Robert Earl Lewis and they had 63 happy years together. They enjoyed square dancing, playing Rook with friends, gardening, travel, and most of all, nurturing their children.

Lucille’s faith was her compass. A member of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church for 80 years, she served as a long-term Sunday school teacher and in various leadership roles. For nearly 50 years Lucille served her community as a hairdresser and enjoyed long friendships with many of her customers. She loved to read and worked to expand the Alexandria Library while serving on the county library board.

To her family, she was the matriarch whose strength never wavered. She is survived by her children, Greg Lewis (Sallie) of Brentwood, TN and Lisa Lewis Duke (Stan) of Knoxville, TN. Her six grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Mither” include Anne Lawton (George) of Vestavia Hills, AL; Mary Rosenbaum (Adam) of Franklin, TN; Daniel Lewis (Tami) of Knoxville, TN; Tyler Duke (deceased); Weston Duke (Hannah) of Herndon, VA; and Anna Duke of Los Angeles, CA. She was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Jodean Vantrease, her sister-in-law Betty Lattimore, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert Earl Lewis, grandson Tyler Duke, her brothers Lonnie and Robert Atwood, and sisters Ruth Agee, Margie Floyd and Thelma Tubb.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct 31 at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown, TN. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30 and prior to services on Saturday at the same location. Interment will be in Hillview Cemetery in Alexandria. Rev. Weston Duke and Rev. Tim Diffenderfer will officiate.

Memorials can be made to Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church or the Alexandria Library.
